Many, many years ago I failed to check the engine oil in an old car I had. I was leaving a fast food joint waiting for traffic to clear when the car just quit running. It wouldn’t even turn over again and it was all my fault. I simply neglected to put oil in it to the point the engine ran dry and seized up. In other words it was off to the junk yard.
If we fail to lubricate and maintain our vehicles we will eventually suffer such disaster. We need to have the oil checked, and periodically changed in order to run efficiently. Vehicle engines have a lot of moving parts so it is imperative to maintain them. Watch those warning lights and gauges, they are there to help prevent catastrophic damage from occurring!
I was thinking this morning about our spiritual engines. When we neglect them, the lifeblood of our inner-workings, we can dry up and implode just as destructively as my old car did! We need the lubrication of prayer and Bible study, a heart that is tuned-up and revving strong with all the parts working and functioning smoothly. You can wash your car, polish the chrome and Windex the glass until its almost not there, but neglect the engine and you will have a real expensive paperweight!
Learning to maintain our spiritual life is one of the most important things we can do to survive the harsh weather on the horizon. Attitude adjusted, love on full, generosity checked, motivations cleaned and ready. Watch those gauges, are you low on joy or running on fumes with temptation just ahead?
Back to that pesky oil again; when it comes down to it, I only needed to open the hood and check the dipstick and add a couple quarts and I could have avoided all that trouble.
Five bucks and five minutes.
Today, start with 5 minutes in the Bible and 5 minutes in prayer, and watch your engine fire up like never before. Take care of the most important parts of you, your heart, mind, and spirit, the components that power your life. The simple maintenance you do now will yield a lifetime of worry free enjoyment on the road ahead.
When I didn’t keep track of my oil level, it got so low that I destroyed the engine. Maybe it’s time for an oil change, or shall we say an oil “transformation.”
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2
