Having an unpopular approach to the problem of porn in the church has become a badge of honor for me. Complacency and whispers aren’t acceptable in my world anymore. Though I spent the better part of my church life doing everything I could do to be accepted, appreciated and respected, I am no longer bound by those same constraints that put me in a mold and wanted to pop out another religious clone. Speaking softly just lulls people to sleep and saying what they want to hear by giving them a little sugar to sweeten the sour taste of rebuke has proven ineffective.
Recently, I saw a video put out by a prominent online church that espouses its strong stance against porn and its methods of combating the epidemic. I was shocked when I saw this new approach which discounted the war against porn in our minds and bodies and decided to simplify and church-ify its new tactic. In search of elusive relief they decided it isn’t actually a battle we are engaged in and that we merely need to decide to do what is right and embrace the peace we long for.
It’s this kind of confusion that keeps people bound and in hopeless shame.
A Fight to the Finish
…God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.
Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. Ephesians 6:10-18 (MSG)
Put simply as compulsive sin, if porn is allowed to move unchecked in the mind and heart of a Christian, it will set its roots deep and stubbornly hang on.
Its time to take this out of the churches closets and put it to the forefront of our thinking. Its time to de-shame it and put our resources to fighting it. Its time to get in the battle and get off the periphery. Its time to be courageous and brave. I promise you that within virtually every heart of those bound by sin is a strong desire for freedom from its grip. If we weren’t meant to walk this christian journey alone, then we must be all-in against whatever we individually face for the survival of all.
